Singapore: Sri Mariamman Temple, Chinatown.

Sri Mariamman Temple, the oldest temple in Singapore, is located on South Bridge Road in Chinatown, just a few minutes’ walk from B129. Built in 1827 by Indian immigrants from the Nagapatnam and Cuddalore districts of South India, this Hindu temple is dedicated to Goddess Mariamman, known for her power in curing epidemic illnesses. The temple’s ornamental tower entrance, or gopuram, has been a landmark for generations of Hindu worshippers and Singaporeans.

During colonial times, Sri Mariamman Temple served as a refuge for new immigrants and played an important role in community activities. These days, the temple hosts Theemithi, a fire walking ceremony held annually in October/November, which is the main festival celebrated by the temple.
